Strengthening School Safety with Connectivity and Communication: A First Responder’s Perspective

After more than two decades in law enforcement and years spent as a School Resource Officer (SRO), I know one undeniable truth: when it comes to school safety, communication is everything.

Schools are meant to be places of learning, laughter and growth. But as an SRO, my job was to ensure they were also places of security. In the moments when a crisis unfolds—whether it’s a fight in the hallway, a medical emergency or, worst of all, an active shooter situation—seconds count.

As an SRO, I had to be prepared for anything. I’ve responded to situations like minor disruptions to serious threats, and in each instance, clear communication made the difference between control and chaos. In an active shooter scenario—the kind of situation every officer hopes never happens but must always be ready for—delays in communication could cost lives.

Traditional communication systems, including radios or mobile phones, often struggle in moments of crisis. Let’s face it, networks get jammed, devices fail and critical alerts don’t always reach the right people.

In my experience, I’ve found Push-to-Talk (PTT) to be one of the most effective ways for SROs to instantly coordinate with teachers, administrators and responding officers in real time. If an emergency unfolds, the communication of crucial instructions can be executed immediately.

I’m a firm believer that Push-to-Talk (PTT) technology has become an absolute necessity for school safety. One of the most powerful aspects of PTT technology is its ability to integrate with schoolwide alert systems and neighboring law enforcement agencies.

This means that with the push of a button, an SRO can trigger a lockdown, send an emergency notification, request additional backup and instantly alert staff that a threat is present. In an active shooter situation, this kind of capability is invaluable. The reality is that school security depends on rapid coordination—every second that passes before law enforcement arrives is another second of vulnerability.

Beyond crisis response, PTT enhances everyday safety measures. It allows SROs to keep lines of communication open throughout the school day, helping prevent small issues from becoming big problems. Whether it’s ensuring that a lost student is quickly found or de-escalating a tense situation before it turns physical, PTT equips school staff with the tools they need to maintain a safe and secure environment.

Technology will never replace the presence of trained officers or the vigilance of committed educators—but it can amplify their ability to keep students safe. As schools continue to evolve their safety strategies, integrating tools like PTT into their response plans is essential.

I’ve seen firsthand how the right technology can be the difference between tragedy and protection. When it comes to school safety, we don’t have the luxury of second chances.
